I’m realizing there are more people just like me who think they really care about the planet and want to help it, yet whose actions show just the opposite.
As an example, I was watching a HGTV’s House Hunters episode (it’s a cable or satellite tv show that lets viewers “be a fly on the wall” and go along as they search for a home). The episode I was watching was about a couple who were looking for a second home but insisted it be an eco-friendly home because they care about the environment.
There’s no way that buying a second home is eco-friendly. I don’t recall the exact square footage of their first home, but I believe it’s a little over 3,000 square feet for a house that only 2 people are living in. But, they wanted a second home near water so they searched for an eco-friendly home in another state. Two homes for two people – that’s big time resources hogging and is not eco-friendly.
Plus, since their second home is in another state how much fuel are they going to be using to travel back and forth?
I’m not pointing out this couple because I want to pick on them. I’m pointing them out because I think they are a lot like I used to be which was a “person who cared about the environment but was doing way too little to show it.”
It’s not about money anymore and whether or not a person can afford to own more than one home. It’s about whether or not our planet can afford to support people who own more than one home. It can’t. We (and when I say “we” I’m referring to most of the people in the United States, which is where I live, because are horrible resource hogs) have been burning through resources like crazy, especially since the industrial revolution started and we have to stop or some resources we now take for granted will be gone forever.
