Earth Day 2008

Today, April 22, 2008 is Earth Day.  Did you do anything to help the Earth or to start living greener?

I picked up some trash along a nature trail near my house and my husband planted two apple trees in our yard.

Even though I think Earth Day is a great way to bring living greener and being more ecological minded to the front of people’s minds, there’s probably a lot more we can all do to be kinder to the planet we live on every day of the year.

Until a couple weeks ago I thought I was living pretty green.  In the past three years I’ve cut my fuel consumption by more than 50 percent; I faithfully recycle; I use energy saving light bulbs; I hang my laundry outside to dry weather permitting; and I’m eating more fruits and vegetables – many of which my husband and I grow in our own garden.

So I was feeling pretty smug when I took a quiz to see what my ecological footprint is.  To say I was shocked when I found out that if everyone lived the way I do we would need 7.9 planets was an understatement.  I was dumbfounded and completely embarrassed.   The quiz is on the EarthDay.net website but it’s being redone right now.

After finding out the results of my overconsumption of resources, I decided I needed to get serious about living greener. In order to do that I need to learn more about living it so I’m going to use this blog to share what I learn along the way. I’ll give you updates on my progress; share tips; post current news about environmental issues; and give examples of people, businesses and countries around the world who are living greener and helping save the Earth.

Please feel free to share your thoughts and any tips for greener living you have. Together we can make a difference.
