arctic ice picture

Whether or not a person believes in global warming, it’s hard to not be worried about the low ice levels in the Arctic. A recent article Eos, a journal of the American Geophysical Union, about the topic has some sobering information. Some of the points covered in the article:

- Scientists are saying the a major Arctic sea ice melt is expected this summer and that “the long-term prognosis is not very optimistic” according to atmospheric scientist Jennifer Francis of Rutgers University.

- Former global warming skeptic, oceanographer James Overland, says of the Arctic region “there is very little chance for the climate to return to the conditions of 20 years ago.”

- Although the Arctic has seen the most changes occur, the Antarctic region will start to see warmer temperatures and large ice melts in the coming years as well.

- Climatologist Gareth Marshall says “all studes now show that human activites are the drivers of climate change in the Antarctic.”

A few days ago I wrote how many experts say we are fast heading toward the point of no return in regards to being able to undo damage humans have already inflicted on the planet. To me, this is more evidence that it’s happening.
