Over the weekend, my local newspaper shared the top the 10 tips for water conservation as provided to them by the American Water Works Association. The first one is a reminder of the tip I posted yesterday about not leaving water running while brushing teeth. The other 9 are good as well although some of them are not applicable to everyone.

Top 10 water conservation tips

  • Don’t leave the sink running while brushing teeth.
  • Fully load the dishwasher and clothes washer.
  • When washing dishes by hand, don’t let the water run.
  • Repair dripping faucets and leaky toilets.
  • Install water-efficient appliances.
  • Don’t over-water the lawn, and water early in the morning or at night to avoid excess evaporation.
  • When the driveway or sidewalk needs cleaning, consider a broom instead of a hose. It can save up to 80 gallons of water.
  • Use a swimming pool cover. It will cut evaporation by 90 percent.
  • Help preserve the quality of the available water supply by not overusing pesticides and fertilizers, avoiding flushing medications down the toilet or sink, and disposing of hazardous materials properly.
  • Place rain barrels beneath your downspouts. The rainwater can be used for outdoor plants and trees or to wash a car.
