ProTaveller put together a list of 20 places that are most threated by global warming from a vacationers perspective and it isn’t a pretty picture. It’s a list of some of the most popular travel destinations in the world.

It is not a list that is meant to scare you although I will admit it scares me and that it caught my attention. Sustained higher temperatures are going to affect things in nature and that is what global warming is about.

Here’s the list:

- Palau, Micronesia - This Pacific Island has become a popular travel destination since being named one of the seven underwater wonders of the world. palau

- Great Barrier Reef, Australia
- another of the seven underwater wonders of the world. Parts of the Great Barrier Reef have already been damaged by greenhouse gas emissions.

- Maldives, Indian Ocean
- Scientists are saying this island nation will likely completely disappear into the water within 100 years. maldives

- Virgin Islands, Caribbean
- Damage to the islands natural landscape and animal life are already happening.

- Cook Islands, Pacific Ocean
- The chain of islands are low lying and face being submerged by rising sea levels.

- Galapagos Islands, Pacific Ocean - One of the islands lure for tourists is that it is where Darwin went to conduct his studies on his theory of evolution. The islands are being threatened by overfishing, oil spills, development, agriculture, pollution, global warming, and excessive tourism (too much of a good thing is bad).

- Belize Barrier Reef, Belize - This is the second largest barrier reef in the world (the Great Barrier Reef is first). Damage to the reef from global warming is already occurring.

- Red Sea Reefs, Egypt - An artificial reef may be grown to protect the natural reef.

- Tokyo, Japan - Temperatures have been rising 5 times faster than the average global warming rate. tokyo japan

- London, UK - Scientists say London could be under water in as little as 100 years.

- New York City, USA - The city is threatened by rising water and flooding that could occur from global warming although the city is working hard to reduce the threats to it.

- New Orleans, USA - New Orleans is still recovering from 2005 damage caused by Hurricane Katrina. It is a low lying city (under sea level) that is at major risk from rising sea waters.

- Jakarta, Indonesia - Major flooding occurred here in 2007 and was believed to be a direct result of climate change.

- India - Water patterns are reducing the flow of water throughout the entire country and it is in danger from extreme weather phenomena such as extremely high temperatures and a greater number of cyclones.

- Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania - Glaciers at the top of the mountain are melting rapidly and could be completely gone by 2020. mount kilimanjaro

- Yellowstone National Park, USA - It is the oldest national park in the United States but its wildlife and nature are being seriously threatened by climate change.

- Lake Baika, Siberia - It is the deepest lake in the world and also the largest known freshwater lake. The water temperature in the lake has already begun to rise.

- Glacier National Park, USA - The glaciers at the park are disappearing. They have decreased from 150 to 26 in the last 150 years. montana glacier

- Columbia Glacier, Alaska - This is the largest glacier in Alaska and it’s disappearing. It is a very popular tourist attraction but tours are becoming very difficult to provide because the glacier is moving at a very rapid rate. columbia glacier

- Death Valley, USA - Flooding isn’t what is threatening Death Valley but rather rising temperatures which could make it impossible to cross.
