Oil Companies Protected If Polar Bears Harmed

The AP is reporting that Bush administration is giving oil companies permission to explore oil even if “small numbers of polar bears or Pacific walruses are incidentally harmed.”

How nice. Here’s another example of President Bush putting the interests of the oil companies ahead of environmental concerns. It’s been less than a month since polar bears have been declared a threatened species because of global warming.

I understand the need to look for oil and protect ourselves because we have made ourselves completely dependent on oil; but I’d rather see strict protection for the polar bears and walruses and instead be more aggressively pursue alternative forms of energy and lessen our dependence on oil.

It bothers me, and I’m sure others as well, that big oil companies have so much influence over U.S. politicians.
